Barron Douglas Goodson

August 13, 1949 — January 5, 2012

Barron Douglas Goodson, 62, entered into peaceful, eternal rest on Thursday, January 5th, in his country home where he was surrounded by his devoted family following his twenty month survivorship of cancer. Mr. Goodson was born August 13, 1949 in Lincoln County to the late Mary and Ray Goodson. He attended Lincoln County Schools where he was an honor student, member of the Key Club, athlete, Eagle Scout and recipient of the God and Country Award. He graduated in 1971 with a BS in business administration from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where he was on the Dean's List. Mr. Goodson was employed first in manufacturing supervision with Cannon Mills, Inc. Then he became a purchasing agent and eventually the director of all domestic purchasing for Fieldcrest-Cannon and Pillowtex, working in all three entities for thirty-two years. He was president of Tanglebriar Investments. He was also a licensed building contractor and real estate broker for B and R Realty. He served both as chairman of the Board of Directors for Southern Select Credit Union, Kannapolis, and as a board member. He was a past member of Faith Civitan Club. Mr. Goodson was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Lincolnton, and then Faith Baptist Church, Faith. Barron was a devoted husband to Sharon Ragan Goodson for thirty-eight years and a loving father to Dr. Summer Gail Goodson of Chapel Hill and Sunni Leigh Goodson of Dublin, Ireland. He is also survived by sister Sherri G. Early of Concord, brothers Lilburn K. Goodson of Houston, Texas; and Jerry R. Goodson of Kannapolis; in-laws Dot and JW Ragan of Kannapolis, brothers-in-law Dr. Eddie James Ragan of Old Fort and Steven Wesley Ragan of King, NC and families, as well as many extended family members whom he thoroughly enjoyed. Barron was known for his Christlike qualities, his gentlemanly, quiet manners, and his enthusiasm for and expertise in classic cars. He was a loyal Carolina fan and an avid reader who also enjoyed travelling in this country as well as abroad to his ancestral roots. The bravery and perseverance as well as humility with which he approached his illness has inspired many to follow in the godly steps of this kind-hearted man. A highlight of his life was recently showing the West to his family, having travelled there previously with his dear friend Randy Yarber. He described the scenic national parks as "God's country". A service of thanksgiving to God for Barron's life will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, January 8, at Faith Baptist Church in Faith conducted by Pastor Joe Smith, Reverend Dale Bost, a good friend, and Pastor Spencer Swain of Grace Lower Stone Church, Rockwell. The body will lie in state at the church from 1:15 to 2:00 pm for a time of reflection and meditation with instrumental music. Interment will follow at Grace Lower Stone Church. The family will receive friends at Lady's Funeral Home Saturday, January 7, from 6 until 8:30 pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Relay for Life.org, Kannapolis event or to the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership, 4000 Blue Ridge Road, Suite 170, Raleigh, NC, 27612. The family wishes to express profound gratitude to UNC's Lineberger Cancer Treatment Center, Drs. Mark Socinski and Jared Weiss, nurse navigators Amy Marzinsky and Tammy Allred; Dr. Christopher B. Jones and staff of Northeast Oncology, George Batte Center; nurses of the hospital oncology unit; Cabarrus County Hospice, nurse Jennifer Carroll and CNA Dora Boger, and the Northeast Pain Management Clinic. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. Psalm 37:37
