Dennis Laughton Johnson

Dennis Laughton Johnson, 82, of Barclay Downs Drive, Charlotte, and formerly of Burlington and Kannapolis, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Summit Place of Kings Mountain. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis. The Rev. Steven Pipho will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home. Born April 8, 1926 in Middlesex, NC, he was the son of the late Henry Johnson and Olga Finch Johnson. A graduate of North Carolina State University, he retired as a process engineer from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Gastonia. Mr. Johnson was a veteran of US Navy during World War II and the US Army during the Korean War. His hobbies included fishing, sports, and gardening. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Charlotte, where he was a member of the Church Council. He was also a member of Sigma Chi and Phi Psi fraternities. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hattie Wallace Johnson; four sisters, Swannie Bissette, Henrietta Drye, Bruce Parker and Alberta "Bertie" Whitt; and four brothers, Henry Johnson, Zadac Johnson, Gerald Johnson and Charles Johnson. Survivors include his wife, Lolie Edwards Johnson; two sons, Dennis Laughton "D.J." Johnson, Jr. and wife Nancy, Wallace Scott Johnson and wife Johanna, all of Charlotte; and three grandchildren, Erin Johnson, Mitch Johnson and Zach Johnson. Memorials may be sent to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2422 Ashley Road, Charlotte, NC 28208.
