Edna Fortner Hardin Childers

December 5, 1929 — September 22, 2002

Mrs. Edna Fortner Hardin Childers, 72, formerly of 806 Academy Street, Kannapolis, died Sunday, September 22, 2002, at the home of a grandson, Jimmy Pittman, 8079 Longbriar Drive, Kannapolis, after 18 months of declining health. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 24, 2002, at Eastwood Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Dallas Bennett and the Rev. Curtis Ballard will officiate. The body will remain at Lady's Funeral Home until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the residence on Academy Street. Born December 5, 1929, in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late Carl David Fortner and the late Irene Crisco Fortner Stevens. She worked for Cannon Mills for a number of years and helped her husband, the late Charles Childers, deliver the Daily Independent for 29 years until his death in 1994. She was a faithful member of Eastwood Baptist Church as along as her health permitted. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Hardin Pittman of Kannapolis; one stepson, Charles Randall Childers of Landis; a sister, Laura Jo Hatley of Locust; two brothers, Charles Fortner and Howard Fortner, both of Lexington; six grandchildren, Jimmy, Patty, Donna, Terry, Ronnie and Luke; five great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
