Mrs. Gladys Hughes Houston, 83, of 330 State Road, China Grove, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center. The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at First Wesleyan Church, 301 Bethpage Road, Kannapolis. The Rev. Steve Beam, Rev. Trent Patterson, Rev. Michael Covington and Rev. Leon Thompson will officiate. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence. Born February 1, 1920, in Mt. Olive, NC, she was a daughter of the late John Henry Hughes and the late Georgia Ann Lane Hughes. Mrs. Houston was a homemaker. She was a faithful pastor's wife and worked in many activities in the Wesleyan Church. She was a member of North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Anne Houston. Survivors include her husband, Rev. Edward T. Houston; a daughter, Merle Houston Meckes and her husband, Roland P. Meckes, of China Grove; a brother, George Russell Hughes of Chester, VA; four grandchildren, Dee Efird of China Grove, Beth Carlton of Mooresville, Paul Meckes, Jr. of Kannapolis and Edward "Chip" Meckes of China Grove; four great-grandchildren, Brent Efird, Laura Anne Carlton, Katie Carlton and Wesley Meckes; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church, 314 West 12th Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
