Mrs. Helen Smith Howard, 81, a resident of Big Elm Nursing Center and formerly of Brantley Road, Kannapolis, died Wednesday, November 14, 2007, at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 18, 2007, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Chuck Halipilias and the Rev. Larry Barden will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Born January 15, 1926, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Howard was the daughter of the late Burtis E. Smith and Pearl Sides Smith McClendon. She retired several years ago from the payroll department of Fieldcrest-Cannon Mills. She was a member of Jackson Park United Methodist Church. Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil L. Howard, who died November 22, 2000. Survivors include two sons, Ted Alan Brown and wife, Beth, of Kannapolis, Richard Earl Brown and wife, Debbie, of Mooresville; two sisters, Katherine Carter and Betty Moss, both of Kannapolis; a brother, Gordon Smith of Satellite Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Matthew Brown, Lucas Brown, Elizabeth Freeman and Jennifer Barbee; and three great-grandchildren, Austin Freeman, Bailey Freeman and Caroline Barbee.
