Henry Carlton Whittington

September 26, 1943 — December 23, 2008

Mr. Henry Carlton Whittington passed away very peacefully, but unexpectedly, at his home on December 23, 2008. He was born in Concord, NC to the late Buford and Rachel C. Whittington. He was a graduate of Mooresville High School and loved all sports, having played baseball, basketball and football. He received the Outstanding Basketball Trophy his Junior Year. He loved all sports and continued to play for years in church leagues and industrial leagues. His Freightliner team went to the USSSA Softball World Series in 1982. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier years, but became an avid golfer. After retirement he would play as many as 5 times per week. In the 80's he started running and enjoyed it immensely. He ran the Virginia Beach Marathon in 1993. Also, he coached a number of baseball and basketball teams for the Mooresville Recreation Department in the 80's. He was employed by the Mooresville Fire Department and the Mooresville Police Department for a decade then began a career with Freightliner. He retired from Freightliner with 22 years of service on June 29, 2001. On June 9, 1963 he married the love of his life, Barbara Brotherton Whittington, who survives. He loved his children and deeply wanted the best for them. The children are Carla Michelle W. Robbins and husband, Dale Robbins; Stephanie Blair W. Stevens, and husband, Allen Stevens; and Ryan Carlton Whittington and wife, Julianne Allen Whittington. His Grandchildren were very, very special to him: Jonathan Luke Robbins, Lauren Michelle Robbins, Grant Allen Stevens, Griffin Allen Stevens, Graham Carlton Stevens, Ella Julianne Whittington and Elizabeth Grace Whittington. He is survived by in-laws Pat and Mike Johnston, Judy and Jimmy Moore, Kenny and Darlynn Brotherton, Mildred B. Whittington and Shirley W. Morrow. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews and always enjoyed a visit from them. He became a member of Coddle Creek ARP Church in the early 60's and was an ordained Deacon. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Coddle Creek ARP Church by his Minister, Rev. James Avery Hunt. Burial will be private in the church cemetery prior to the memorial service. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Memorials can be made to the American Red Cross in his memory, Greater Carolinas Chapter, 2425 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28203.
