Idelle Short

d. December 12, 2015

Mrs. Idelle Bennett Short entered eternal life with God on Saturday, December 12.

She was the daughter of Julian and Ada Williams Bennett and was raised in their large farm family in Madison County, Georgia. Idelle married Harrison Short and moved to Kannapolis in 1945 after her husband was discharged from the US Army. When Harrison died in 1972, Idelle returned to school and became a nurse. She worked at the Veterans’ Administration Medical Center in Salisbury where she provided competent and compassionate care to all of her patients until her retirement.

Idelle was an excellent cook and especially excelled in the creation of her cakes. The nickname of “The Cake Lady”, given to her by friends in the community, was well deserved and she generously shared a piece of cake with anyone who visited her home. In 2008 she wrote her own cookbook entitled Idelle’s Kitchen: A Farm Girl’s Life in Recipes which has been enjoyed by her many nieces and nephews, friends and community acquaintances. In addition to cake baking, Idelle was a proficient doll maker and collector of dolls from all over the world.

Mrs. Short is survived by her son, Wayne Short, of Mt. Pleasant and his wife Ann and her daughter, Patsy Queen, and husband Dr. J. Allen Queen of Kings Mountain. Her grandchildren include Kelly Almond and husband Tony, Brad Short and wife Angie, and Adam Short and wife Ashley who all live in Mt. Pleasant. Her fourth grandchild is Dr. Alexander Queen and his wife Dr. Sara Vargas who live in Attleboro, MA. Idelle is also survived by her dear great-grandchildren, Abigail and Claire Queen of Attleboro, MA. Also included in her survivors are many dear nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Short was a member of Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church for 65 years. The funeral service will be held at Lady’s Funeral Home at 2 PM on Friday, December 18 with the Rev. Bobby Sutherland officiating. A reception of friends will take place from 12:30 until 2 PM prior to the funeral service. The burial is private.

The family sincerely thanks the individuals who provided care for Mrs. Short during her illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Ln., Kannapolis, NC 28081.
