Irene Hanes Goodnight

Mrs. Irene Hanes Goodnight, 90, a resident of Best of Care Assisted Living, and formerly of Rainbow Drive, Kannapolis, died Wednesday, September 27, 2006. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2006, at First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Joe Crawford and Dr. Steven L. Mowery will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in the parlor at First Presbyterian Church. At other times they will be at the home of her daughter, Kathy Rumple, 6301 Pagemont Drive, Kannapolis. Born February 26, 1916, in Wilkes County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Worth Haynes and Mary Victoria Greene Haynes. She was a homemaker and formerly owned and operated Lourene Beauty Shop for more than 20 years on N. Main Street in Kannapolis. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed traveling with the senior adults. She was a member of the Kannapolis Towelers, a minor league baseball team. Her team won the State Championship in 1938 and went on to play in the World Series in Chicago. She was also active in the North Carolina Senior Games and was a recipient of several gold medals. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Aubrey Goodnight, who died Sept. 8, 1981; two siblings, Charles Worth Hanes, Jr. and Charlotte Haynes. Survivors include her daughter, Kathy Rumple and husband, Gip Rumple III, of Kannapolis; sister, Gaynell Johnson of Ronda; brothers, Jimmie Greene Haynes and wife, Pat, of Elkin, Jack Devon Haynes and wife, Colleen, of Calabash; grandson, Gipson Rumple IV of Kannapolis; sisters-in-law, Marie "Bill" Goodnight of Concord, Evelyn Goodnight and Mary Lois Conner, both of Kannapolis; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 201 Vance Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or Bethpage Presbyterian Church of Kannapolis, 6020 Mooresville Road, Kannapolis, NC 28081. The family expresses deep appreciation to the staff of Best of Care Assisted Living, for their loving compassion in caring for Irene while she was a resident.
