Mr. James Wriston "J.W." Helms, 101, of 1103 Sunset Drive, Kannapolis, died Friday, February 3, 2006, at NorthEast Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, February 6, 2006, at Calvary Baptist Church. The Rev. Max Smith will officiate. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence. Born July 25, 1904, in Union County, he was a son of the late T. Lexie Helms, Corrinna Biggers Helms and his stepmother, Mary Helms. He had lived in this area since 1931 and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Helms was a barber and was associated with Helms Barber Shop on Oak Avenue for more than 50 years and later with Helms and Mullis Barber Shop on Jackson Park Road. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Anna Cavanaugh Helms; a son, Don Phillip Helms; his son-in-law, Bill Roche; a grandson, Damon Lemly; four sisters and one brother. Survivors include his present wife, Margaret Williams Helms, who resides in a care facility in Estero, Fla.; two daughters, Patricia Lemly of Kannapolis and Barbara Roche of Concord; a sister, Hazel Robinson of South Carolina; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and family members, customers and friends too numerous to name whose lives he touched and served throughout his long and blessed life.
