Jewell Coffey

December 29, 1924 — October 7, 2013

Mrs. Jewell Kearns Coffey, 88, entered into her eternal rest Monday, October 7, 2013. A long-time resident of Morningside Assisted Living Center in Concord, Mrs. Coffey was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Charles Calvin Coffey, pastor of First Baptist Church, Kannapolis from 1953-1977. Mrs. Coffey worked for Kannapolis City Schools in several positions before her retirement. She was born on December 29, 1924 to Ernest Marvin Kearns and Blanche Parrish Kearns in Randolph County. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Max, Bernis, Wayne and Baxter Kearns and by her sisters, Marie K. Baker, Mullie K. Chandler and Moezelle K. Rafferty, all of Asheboro.

Mrs. Coffey is survived by her three children, Judy Coffey McIntosh and husband Wayne of Rock Hill, SC, Charles Richard (Rick) Coffey and Edwin Lee Coffey, both of Kannapolis. In addition, Mrs. Coffey leaves seven grandchildren, Whitney McIntosh, Courtney M. Warren, Torren and wife Dianne S. McIntosh, Brittany McIntosh, Brandon Coffey, Taylor Coffey and Lynnsey Coffey and six great grandchildren, Kayla Duke, Drew Warren, Bryce McIntosh, Kieran McIntosh, Owen McIntosh and Lincoln McIntosh. She is also survived by a sister, Doris K. Frost of Louisville, KY and eight nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Coffey would like to be remembered for her faithful service to her Lord and His Church at Trinity United Methodist. She was a co-teacher of the Exodus Sunday School Class of Trinity for a number of years, a member of the Wesley Fellowship, coordinator of the Church Greeters, member of the Tuesday morning Prayer Group and a member of the Mary Bullock Circle. Before joining Trinity Methodist, she served in numerous positions at First Baptist Church in Kannapolis.

A Celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 am Friday, October 11, 2013 at Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Norman Brisson will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.

Visitation will be held before the service from 10 to 11:00 am at Lady’s Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Coffey Scholarship Fund, First Baptist Church, Attn: Dr. Tom Cabaniss, 101 North Main Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081. The fund is for students wishing to enter the ministry or full-time Christian service. Contributions may also be made to Alzheimer’s Research of North Carolina, Attn: Debbie Wynne, 1305 Navaho Drive, Suite 101, Raleigh, NC 27609.
