Joe Melvin Underwood's faith became sight on April 17, 2010 as he was reunited in Heaven with his wife, Rachel Dover Underwood, his parents, Joda and Willie Underwood and Josie Morrison, and his sister, Sarah Patterson. Joe was born in Kannapolis on September 12, 1929. He met his wife, Rachel, at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Throughout their 51 years of marriage, their faith and devotion to the church remained at the center of their lives. Joe served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. After the war, he returned home and was employed at Cannon Mills. He fixed looms in Plant 10 and worked in the supply room at Plant One. He retired after 50 years of service. Joe was a gifted artist. He enjoyed painting and woodcarving in his spare time. He was a handyman. He loved to fish, and especially enjoyed deep sea fishing with his grandsons, Timmy and Phillip. After his wife Rachel passed away, he spent Wednesdays at the Senior Center where he made many friends. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling with them, especially to Hillbilly Hideaway. Everyone who came in contact with him enjoyed listening to the stories that he loved to tell and remembered his wonderful laugh. More than anything, Joe enjoyed being with his family. His daughter Judy Brant, son-in-law Tim, and grandsons Timmy and Phillip treasure their memories of beach trips, camping events, and moments spent together in love. During the last year, he became a great-grandfather to Hailey. She was the light of his life and was excited about the news of another great-granddaughter on the way. He is also survived by Timmy's wife, Bethany, and Phillip's wife, Julie, his sister, Faye Hinson, stepsister Betty Blair of Florida, stepbrother, Jerry Garmon, sisters-in-law Ruth Hinson, Lucille Hunsucker, Helen Robbins, and Shirley Dover, numerous nieces and nephews, and close family friends, Larry and Hilda Allred. The family is most appreciative of all the love and support that they have received during Joe's illness from their friends, co-workers, and caregivers, Margie Neely and Sharon Hatley. The family will greet friends at Lady's Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6:00 7:45 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate his life and homecoming will follow at 8:00 p.m. The Rev. Curtis Parker and the Rev. Buster Pigg will officiate. Private graveside rites will be held on Friday for the family. Memorials can be made to The Hospice House of Kannapolis, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
