Lela Mae Brinkley

June 19, 1913 — February 5, 2004

Mrs. Lela Mae Slaughter Brinkley, 90, a resident of First Assembly Living Center in Concord and formerly of Kannapolis, died Thursday, February 5, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2004, at First Baptist Church. Dr. Tom Cabaniss and Joseph Morrison will officiate. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church. Born June 19, 1913, in Kemper County, Mississippi, she was a daughter of the late James S. Slaughter and Zonia S. Slaughter. Mrs. Brinkley retired in 1962 from Efird's Department Store in Kannapolis. She was formerly employed in the sheet department of Cannon Mills. She was a member of First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dow Norman Brinkley, who died March 27, 1994; and four brothers, John Slaughter, James Slaughter, Dan Slaughter and Anderson Slaughter. Survivors include two nieces, Sabra Jo Barringer and her husband, Jack, of Kannapolis and Carla Jane Jones and her husband, Richard, of Salisbury; one great-niece, Shannon Barringer of Kannapolis; and five great-nephews, Dr. Richard T. Jones of Waynesville, Roger Morrison of Charlotte, Kelly Morrison, Joseph Morrison and Shane Barringer, all of Kannapolis. Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, Midway Property Fund, 101 N. Main Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
