Leon Alton Smith

Rev. Leon Alton Smith, 91, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2020, at Accordius Health at Concord.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 pm Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at Sharon Baptist Church. He will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Dr. James Strickland and Rev. Buster Pigg will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6:00 pm Monday, February 17, 2020 at Lady's Funeral Home.

Rev. Smith was born December 4, 1928 in Montgomery County. He was a son of the late Claude Smith and Mamie Hatley Smith. He worked for Akers Motor Line for 16 years, then worked in the weave room for Cannon Mills for four years. He retired from Rodgers Park Baptist Church after 22 years, then served as Interim Pastor for Jackson Park Baptist Church for five months before ministering and retiring from Royal Oaks Baptist Church after 17 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Ruth Frye.

Rev. Smith is survived by son, Jerry Alton Smith and wife Judy of Kannapolis; daughter, Brenda Greene of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, April Stoner, Rodney Smith and David Greene; and six great grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Sharon Baptist Church, 2628 Shady Lane Avenue, Concord, NC 28027 or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5005 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
