Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Stewart, 88, of Concord, passed away Thursday, February 22, 2018, at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Epworth United Methodist Church in Concord. Rev. Elizabeth Graves will officiate.
The family will receive friends following the service Saturday at the Fellowship Hall of the church.
Mrs. Stewart was born March 25, 1929 in Concord. She was a daughter of the late James Iverson Gwyn and Rena Estep Gwyn. Mary Graduated from Hartsell High School and then continued her education at a local business college. She worked for H E Hall Furniture Company until they closed in the early 1960s. She then started a career at the Better Business Bureau, where she worked until she retired. She and her husband both lived in Concord, where they attended Epworth United Methodist Church. Mary loved her church and was very active, always giving of herself and love to all that she did and to all that she met. She also delivered Meals on Wheels until she became sick in 2017. When Mary became ill, she moved to Kannapolis with her niece and nephew, Vickie and Kent Carpenter, where she stayed until she was taken to Tucker Hospice House.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Marshall Stewart in 2011; brother, James Eugene Gwyn; and sister, Odelia Oglesby.
Mrs. Stewart is survived by her sister, Ethel Gwyn Wyant of Kannapolis; four nieces, Vickie Carpenter and husband Kent, Samantha Heintz, Mariann Pisciotto-Gwyn and Sherry Meadows; five nephews, John Heniz, Don Heniz, Jimmy Gwyn, Johnny Gwyn and Bobby Joe Stewart; a number of great nieces and nephews; and a great-great nephew.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 1030 Burrage Road NE, Concord, NC 28025; Wings of Eagles Ranch, 4800 Faith Trails, Concord, NC 28025; or to Cabarrus Meals on Wheels 1701 South Main Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
Mary's nieces and caregiver, Vickie Carpenter, would like to send a special thank you to Tammy Morgan at Concord Internal Medicine, who was always there to help her; all the staff at Bayada Health Care; and especially her nurse, Courtney Taylor, who never gave up; Rachelle Brown, who was such a sweet, loving and king caregiver; and to the staff at Tucker Hospice Hous for their care, kindness and love shown to Mary and her family. She is so thankful and blessed to have had all of the help to be able to give her aunt the love and care that she needed.
