Maxine Purser Rushing, 101, of Charlotte, NC, died on September 18, 2026 in Charlotte, NC.

She was born on July 28, 1925, to Zeb Vann Purser and Emma Mullis Purser in Union County, NC as one of eight children.

Maxine, known as Mamaw to many, was married to James McKinley Rushing and they loved and raised five children: Linda Rushing Timmer, Teresa Rushing Yoder, June Rushing Brisson, Denise Rushing Smart and James (Jimmy) Rushing. She also loved and helped to raise niece Carolyn Stillwell, whom was treated as a daughter and was much beloved.

Maxine was a loving wife, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother and a friend to all who knew her. She was a giving and kind person, a homemaker that raised five children, and cared for nieces, nephews and many neighbors. She was a great cook who made the best pies, pound cakes, and biscuits and people were always at her home to eat her delicious treats, she never turned anyone away. She was a skilled cake decorator and also made wedding cakes and birthday cakes for many in the family. Maxine was an avid gardener who could grow anything, she loved her flowers and always had beautiful gardens around her home. She was a very talented painter and her paintings have become treasured by members of the family.

Maxine is survived by siblings JB Purser (Joyce) and Janet Rivard; three children, Teresa Yoder (Steve), June Brisson (Josh), and Denise Smart (Steve); nine grandchildren, Shay Mulkey, Marnie Sullivan, Michele Williams, Jon Caldwell, Jennifer Kirkland, DeAnn Newton,Jamie Smart, Martin Rushing and Jessica Lowder; 16 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: parents Zeb Van Purser and Emma Mullis Purser, husband James Rushing, siblings Wilkie Purser, Earl Purser, Ben Purser, Kermit Purser and Glennie Hope, daughter Linda Timmer, son Jimmy Rushing, grandson Steve Smart.

A Visitation and Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel at Arlington Baptist Church, 9801 Arlington Church Road, Mint Hill, NC on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Visitation will be held at10:30am with the Memorial Service at 11:00am.
