Ms. Maxine Merrell Spoon, 70, a resident of Universal Healthcare in Concord and formerly of Atlanta, Georgia, died Monday, June 27, 2005, at the nursing center. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2005, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1601 Cooper Avenue, Kannapolis. Bishop James R. Johnson and Mr. Jonathan King will officiate. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham. The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At other times, they will be at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Bob Morgann, 153 Corban Avenue SE, Concord. Born November 6, 1934, in Atlanta, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Jesse Mercer Merrell, Jr. and Frances Young Merrell. She retired several years ago from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga. and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Kannapolis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, David Simpson. Survivors include a daughter, Laura Morgann of Concord; two sons, Steven Simpson of Atlanta, Ga. and Chris Simpson of Mexico; a sister, Elaine Merrell Jackson of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Jesse Mercer Merrell III of Phoenix, Az.; four grandchildren, Marie Morgann and Sarah Morgann, both of Concord, Marley Simpson of Charlotte and Christopher Simpson of Valdosta, Ga.; two former husbands, Broughton Eugene Simpson of Florida and John Carl Spoon of Concord; and two great-aunts, Lucy Merrell and Barbara Carter. Memorials may be sent to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1601 Cooper Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28081. Lady's Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
