Mr. Melvin Lee Phillips, 70, died on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast after a short illness. Mel was born in Wilbur, WA and was the second son of Gene Phillips and Blanche Shipley. He received his BA from the University of Washington, his MA from the University of Nevada, and completed further graduate work at the City University of New York with a specialty in Political Science. His professional life included administrative positions with the United Way in Nevada and New Jersey and most recently with the Office of the Aging for the State of Nevada where, among other things, he prepared grant proposals focusing on Alzheimer's disease. He retired and moved to Concord, NC in 2007. Mel enjoyed reading, especially the New York Times, watching movies, and spending time at Starbucks with new Concord friends. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels of Cabarrus County. Mel was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Debby. He is survived by his daughter, Alexis Phillips of Evanston, Ill; his brother, Bob Phillips of Concord; his step-children, Kelly Arant and David Saunders and four step-grandchildren, Summer Snow and Megan, Danielle and Brandon Arant of Nevada.
