Mrs. Mildred Hunsucker Johnston Lyerly, 94, passed away Thursday, September 22, 2016.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 pm Wednesday, September 28, 2016, in Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Mike Roper will officiate. Interment will follow at Gilwood Presbyterian Church.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 12:45 pm Wednesday at the funeral home prior to the service.

Mrs. Lyerly was born August 29, 1922 in Rowan County. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Hunsucker and Mary Ervin Hunsucker. She worked for Black’s Drug Store in Kannapolis and she and her late husband operated Johnston’s Grocery at White Hill on West “C” Street in Kannapolis.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph J. Johnston, Sr.; second husband, Hubert Lyerly; and both of her sons, Ralph J. Johnston, Jr. and Thomas D. Johnston, Sr.

Mildred is survived by three grandchildren, Ralph “Jay” Johnston, III, Tonya Hite and Tommy Dan Johnston, Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Sonya Johnston; and a sister, Mary “Nappie” Wilkerson.
