Mr. Phillip Stanley "Phil" Barr, 61, of Kannapolis, died Friday, August 7, 2009 at Tucker Hospice House. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at Franklin Heights Baptist Church, 526 Wright Avenue, Kannapolis. The Rev. Jim Grigg will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the US Navy. Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2009 at the Salisbury National Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Franklin Heights Baptist Church. Born July 19, 1948 in Lexington, SC, he was the son of the late Thomas Lee Barr and Addie Shull Barr. He retired from Bell-South in Charlotte, where he was a transmission engineer specialist. He later worked with Syncworks and AFL Communications in Charlotte. A veteran of the US Navy, he served aboard the USS Independence. He retired from the US Naval Reserve in 1987 following 26 1/2 years of service. Phil was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed his Mercedes automobiles. He was a member of the Masons. Survivors include his wife, Tammy Compton Barr; a daughter, Lilly Drew Barr of Kannapolis; four sons, David Barr, Chris Barr and Geoffrey Barr, all of Charlotte, Scott Barr and wife Latressa of China Grove; a sister, Sandra B. Chapman of Lexington, SC; three brothers, Freddie L. Barr and wife Jackie and Michael L. Barr, all of Lexington, SC, Glen A. Barr and wife Shirley of Norway, SC; three grandchildren, Maressa Cline, Alanah Barr and Jordan Barr; and his lifetime friend, Johnny Manco. Memorials may be sent to Franklin Heights Christian Academy, 526 Wright Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28083.
