Phillip Fagan Squires, aka Lazybones, 59, of Cove Lane, China Grove, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at CMC-Northeast. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Memorial Baptist Church, Kannapolis. The Rev. Tim McQueen will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2009, at Lady's Funeral Home. Born May 30, 1949 in Cabarrus County, he was the son of the late James Harold Squires and Margaret Fagan Squires. A graduate of A.L. Brown High School, he was a truck driver for Yellow Freight in Charlotte. He formerly taught for Charlotte Truck Driving School and Wagner Truck Driving School. During his 40 year trucking career, he drove for Billings Trucking, Pilot Freight Carriers and Cooper Transportation. He was a member of Teamsters Local Union 71. Phil was a also a member of Memorial Baptist Church. He was an amateur genealogist and ham radio operator. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Harold Squires, Jr. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Martin Squires of the home; daughter, Lisa Gantt and husband, Lair, of Candler; and a grandson, Joseph Bailey Gantt. The family wishes to thank NorthEast Oncology, Dr. Karis Kremers, Yellow Freight, Hubert and Judy Lippard, Memorial Baptist Church, and Teamsters Local 71, for their kindness and support. It was felt by Phil and the family during a difficult time. Memorials may be sent to Memorial Baptist Church, 1785 Dale Earnhardt Boulevard, Kannapolis, NC 28083, or American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123, or the humane society of the donor's choice. The family encourages casual dress at the visitation and funeral service.
