A graveside service will be held at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park (Roanoke, VA) on Saturday, July 15 at 11:00. Following the service all guests are invited to a “Celebration of Life” luncheon at Hotel Roanoke in her honor.
Pearl Chew passed away on July 12, 2023, at the age of 105 in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was born Ruby Pearl Bevins on January 29, 1918, in Coeburn, Virginia to Charles and Bertie Bevins. After graduating from beauty school in 1940, she obtained her license and became an entrepreneur opening the Pearisburg Beauty Salon with a colleague and friend. Her most proud and pivotal experience was serving as an Examiner with the Virginia State Police Department, the first women’s auxiliary of its kind during WWII, for which she was awarded a Commendation for Service in 2019 by the Virginia State General Assembly on her 100th birthday. This fortuitous career change led her to a loving marriage with the late Major Robert Lee Chew who served proudly as a Virginia State Trooper until his retirement.
She is survived by her three children, Lee, Catherine, and Martha, five grandchildren, four great- grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews and her adopted children Denise Parries (deceased), Frankie Parries and Robin Wright. Ruby Pearl will be remembered for her ability to make people laugh, her desire to always help others, and most of all, for her zany comments that made us smile (most of the time). She was dearly loved and will be sorely missed.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made in her honor to the Virginia State Police Association Emergency Relief Fund at 6942 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond, VA 23225.
