Sheila Beatrice Caruth Kidd

January 12, 1926 — May 14, 2017

Mrs. Sheila Beatrice Caruth Kidd of Huntersville, NC, died on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2017, at Best of Care in Kannapolis.

Sheila was born Jan. 12, 1926 in Norfolk, Norwich, England, and arrived in the US in 1946 as wife to Latta G. Kidd, who served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He died in 1999.

The couple met when Sheila was a nursing student at a hospital in Axminster. Latt was stationed at an Allied medical station set up adjacent to the hospital for the care of wounded soldiers brought in from the Continent. At war’s end he returned via troop ship to his family’s Huntersville cotton farm. Sheila and their first child arrived some months later via U.S. Army transport ship for soldiers’ wives and children.

There would be three other children, and eventually the family would operate their own dairy farm in northern Mecklenburg County, adjacent to Latt’s family’s farm on a road now named for his dad, Jim Kidd.

Sheila was a devoted and caring wife and mother. To help support the farm in its early years, she worked first in an office, and after updating her nursing training, as a third-shift nurse at Charlotte’s Presbyterian Hospital on Hawthorne Lane.

In retirement she resided at The Pines at Davidson, and made frequent trips to the mountains of Ashe County. Perhaps as a result of days of endurance during Britain’s wartime years, with blackouts and air raids and rationing, Sheila found huge delight in restoring worn and discarded items. It pleased her so to make them shiny and useful again.

In addition to her parents and husband, a daughter, Patricia Kidd Humphries predeceased her.

Survivors include daughter Barbara Kidd Lawing, son David Kidd (wife Linda), son Mike Kidd (wife Vickie), grandchildren and great- and great-great grandchildren, all residents of Mecklenburg or surrounding counties. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

The family will receive visitors at the family home on Jim Kidd Road, Sunday afternoon May 21, 2017 between 3:00 and 5:00 pm.
