Solomon Barnette

April 11, 1923 — November 30, 2011

Mr. Solomon "Barney" Felix Barnette, 88, formerly of Hiddenite, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at his niece's home in Locust. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 am Saturday, December 3, 2011, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Randy Tucker and Rev. Vaudry Tucker will officiate. Interment with military honors by the Cabarrus Veterans Honor Guard will follow at Kannapolis Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9:00 pm Friday at Lady's Funeral Home. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. He received the Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster and four Bronze Stars for his service in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes Campaigns. Previously having worked for Cannon Mills in Kannapolis, he worked as a carpenter for commercial construction at his retirement. Mr. Barnette was a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Masonic Lodge, a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in China Grove and a member of the Carpenters Union in Washington, DC. He was a faithful supporter of the American Indian Council, Feed the Children program and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Estelle Lowder Barnette; son, Ronald Gene Barnette; sister, Lillian Scarborough; four brothers, Edgar "Bill" Willis Barnette, Max E. Barnette, Vivan "Jiggs" Barnette and Leroy Barnette. Mr. Barnette is survived by sisters, Helen Morris of Kannapolis, Cecil Walker of Concord and Hazel Bradshaw of Hiddenite; a number of nieces and nephews and two foster children, Fredrick Spencer of Arizona and Catherine Keener of South Carolina. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Church, 230 Chasity Lane, China Grove, NC 28023 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
