Mr. Troy Lee Childers, 73, of 2802 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kannapolis, a loving husband and father, died Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast. Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2010 at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ron Hartman will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will follow at the Salisbury National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home. Born February 27, 1936 in Alexander County, he was the son of the late Loyd L. Childers and Mazo Campbell Childers. He retired on November 30, 1985 from the US Marine Corps, following 28 years of service. At the time of his retirement, he held the rank of Sergeant Major. His decorations, medals, badges, citations and campaign ribbons awarded him included, Rifle Expert Badge, Pistol Expert Badge, Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinction, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Mast, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Certificate of Appreciation and the Good Conduct Medal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rondal Childers; and a nephew, Michael Weant. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Deal Childers; daughter, Pamela Lynn Childers of Salisbury; two sisters, Evelyn Weant and husband R.D., and Lois Childers, all of China Grove; a brother, Jimmie Childers of China Grove; and two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Peggy and Paul Barnhardt, and Debby and Jamie Duncan, all of Kannapolis.
