Virginia Elliott Joines

September 13, 1925 — July 15, 2009

Virginia Elliott Joines, 83, peacefully passed from this life to her Heavenly home on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at the Bob and Carolyn Tucker Hospice House. She had been in declining health for five months and seriously ill for ten days. She was born September 13, 1925 in Cabarrus County but grew up with friends in Kannapolis after being orphaned at the age of ten. Virginia worked in Cannon Mills for forty-seven years in the washcloth department. She also worked part-time for a while at Terry Products. Virginia, or Mimi to her much loved grandchildren, will always be remembered for her love of helping others any way she could, for her wonderful baked goods, sewing skills, and everyday love and concern for her family and friends. Her love of God was shown in all she said and did. Virginia was a longtime member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church having taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Mission Friends. She kept the nursery in her younger years. She loved visiting with the elderly and headed the homebound ministry for years. She was always quick to prepare a meal for someone in need. She chaired the funeral meal committee at her church when she was able. She was an active member of the Charming Years group. In later years, Virginia worried that she couldn't do as much to help others, but she kept a positive attitude and was an inspiration to those closest to her. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years, Clegg Lee Joines, who died May 9, 2004; and sisters, Peggy Cockerham and Frances Johnson. She never ceased to love and miss them. Survivors include her daughter Rhoda Carter and son-in-law Charles as well as grandson Patrick Carter all of Kannapolis. She is also survived by grandson Navy Air Traffic Controlman 2nd Class, Petty Officer Michael Carter assigned to the USS Nimitz in San Diego, California and his wife Betty and great-granddaughter June of Calexico, California. She also leaves behind her beloved poodles Precious, Beau, and Prince; special nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved; and a special friend, Jean Bost. Visitation with family will be at Lady's Funeral Home on Friday, July 17th, from 6 to 8 p.m. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, July 18th at 11 a.m. at North Kannapolis Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Chris O'Guin. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. At other times, the family will be at the home of her daughter, Rhoda Carter. Memorials may be made to North Kannapolis Baptist Church, 312 Locust Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081, Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081, or to the charity of one's choice.
