Vyrett Lyman Chamberlain

December 28, 1921 — May 6, 2010

Longtime Kenai resident, Vyrett (Bud) Chamberlain, age 88, died peacefully at the Kannapolis, NC home of his step-son, Michael Carty, on May 6, 2010. He was born in Vancouver, Washington on December 28, 1921, the son of Vyrett Lyman Chamberlain and Mable Emily Bullock Chamberlain. Upon graduation from high school he joined the US Navy to serve bravely in World War II. Bud moved to the Kenai Peninsula in 1958, working as a carpenter and a member of the Southern Alaska Carpenters Union until his retirement in 1986. He also fished commercially for many years in the Cook Inlet. Bud married the love of his life, Velma (Gin) Carty in 1969. Bud and Gin had a wonderful life together gardening and traveling until her death in 1998. They were known for their beautiful bluff property on the North Road. Their garden and greenhouse produce which he grew were enjoyed by many family and friends. Bud continued to garden with the help of his friend, Norma Thornton, through the summer of 2009. Though he spent the last months of his life in North Carolina, Bud appreciated the visits, cards and phone calls from his family and friends. He was a member of the Kenai Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, whose support meant so much to him. Bud is survived by his stepsons, Michael Carty and wife Janice, of Kannapolis, NC and Patrick Carty and wife Penny, of Nikiski, AK; three grandchildren, Laura Wicklund of Harrisburg, NC; Heather Daniels and husband Jason of Kenai, AK and Eric Carty of Anchorage, AK and two great-granddaughters. He is also survived by his brother, Joe Chamberlain and wife Arlene, of Tigard, OR and his special nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Nadine Robertson, Bud's angel and caregiver, Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, Dr. David Cody and the staff of Cabarrus Family Physicians-Poplar Tent, Dr. Adam Flowers and staff of NorthEast Orthopedics, and the staff of The Oaks in Harrisburg. The service to honor Bud's life will be held at a later date in Kenai. Memorials to honor Bud should be made to: Cabarrus County Hospice & Palliative Care, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
