Chief Wilbert Reid Carter, the son of the late Nathaniel Carter and the late Della Reid Carter, was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on January 10, 1959. He departed this life on July 23rd, 2022.
Wilbert graduated from West Mecklenburg High School and attended NC State University and Brevard College where he studied Business Administration. Chief Carter worked for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Office (CMSO) for 23 years and served as a Captain.
He was a jack of all trades and his achievements are outstanding. He was the first minority Gold Level Bowling Coach in the USA where he trained Norm Duke and many others. Chief Carter also became a professional boxing trainer where he had a hand with a few greats, namely George Foreman and Muhammad Ali. He was a proud owner of the Iron Castle Gym.
Chief Carter pursued and founded his own private policing agency, Kodiak International and On Guard Security. He was an active member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and later certified as a Master Trainer. He provided professional instruction as a “Glock” trainer and offered classes as a Concealed Carry Instructor.
He was a member of the Zechariah Alexander Sr. Lodge No. 833. Chief Carter was a member of Victory Tabernacle Interdenominational Ministries in Harrisburg NC.
He is preceded in death by his parents Nathaniel Carter and Della Reid Carter, his paternal grandparents Govan W. Carter and Geneva Robinson Carter and his maternal grandparents Rev. Elijah Filetus Reid and Mrs. Eva Wilks Reid.
He leaves to cherish his memories of his best friend and loving wife, Pastor Gervonne Carter, “Chickie Baby” as he so affectionately called her, one son/dog Rambo Carter, both of the home, one daughter, Erica Gibson and one grandson, Kingston Ross, both of Charlotte, NC, one brother, Gary Carter (Brenda) of Charlotte, NC), three aunts, Agnes Blakeney, Madge Givens (John Dell) and Rose Nichols (Celester), a loving Mother-in-law, Mrs. Betty Bennett, one niece, Natalie M. Carter and one nephew, Gary J. Carter, special godchildren, Denzeal Sherer, Diamond Sherer and Nathaniel Sherer, five loving sisters-in-law, four brother-in-laws and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
He also leaves to cherish fond memories of his best friend Jeff McFaul and his neighbor Mike, Shasta and Mrs. Ruth, all of Charlotte NC.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 pm Friday, July 29, 2022, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 12:45 pm Friday at Lady's Funeral Home.
