Zackie Lee Moore

December 29, 1940 — September 8, 2018

Zackie L. Moore, 77, a life-long resident of Kannapolis, NC, passed away on Saturday, September 8th, 2018 after a brief reoccurrence of cancer. He died in his home surrounded by family.

Zackie was born December 29th, 1940 in Cabarrus County to the late Jack C. and Virginia Gaston Moore.

The oldest of 5 children, Zackie grew up in the Jackson Park neighborhood and attended Kannapolis City Schools. He excelled in numerous sports and graduated from A.L. Brown High School in 1959. He attended Wingate College and later earned his professional land surveyor’s license. Zackie worked many years in Cannon Mills where he held numerous positions, eventually managing civil services. He also owned Kannapolis Surveying, Inc. providing services to many in the greater Cabarrus-Rowan County region.

Zackie served our community in many ways. He coached Little League baseball as well as multiple sports’ teams at the YMCA. He was Scout Master of Troop 49 at First Baptist Church in 1976 and 1977. He served as a deacon and in other leadership roles at Shadybrook Baptist Church for many years. He served as an elections official in the Shadybrook community. Zackie was also active in the Jaycees.

Zackie was a player and coach for community and church teams, including being named a NC Industrial League All-Star for a Cannon Mills softball team. An avid hunter and angler, Zackie was a tournament winning King Mackerel fisherman and taught his children, grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews the love of the outdoors. Zackie was also a passionate golfer, who would take a dollar from you in a heartbeat.

Zackie was a big brother to anyone he met. Whenever anyone needed anything, he would step up. When a team needed a coach, he would not hesitate to volunteer. When someone was down on their luck, he offered them a job. He lived to help others. Family was first to Zackie and family included many in the community who were touched by his generosity and unselfishness.

Zackie will be greatly missed by Lindsay Gantt, his partner of 14 years. He is survived by his three children Mack A. Moore (Amy) of Winston-Salem, Melissa M. Knotts (Scott) of Kannapolis and Richard L. Moore (Matt) of Hampton Falls, NH. He was adored by his grandchildren Samuel Moore, Maggie M. Setzer (Trevor), David Davis, Phoenix Davis, Ashton Knotts, Tommy Knotts, Zechariah Moore, and Noah LaMoore and great-grandchildren James Setzer and Amelia Setzer. Zackie is also survived by Lindsay’s son, Marc (Kim) and their children, Brae and Ty, who, along with Zackie’s grandchildren and great grandchildren, loved their “Poppa”. Zackie is survived by his sisters Susan Compton (Dennis), Jann Kirkman (Johnney), and brother Marc Moore. He was preceded in death by his stepmother Florene Moore and brother Carlos Moore (Joyce).

He will be lovingly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews, dear friends Rick Felts, Kathy Gillon, Helen Stirewalt Correll, and his golfing buddies.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 11 from 6 to 9:00 pm at Lady’s Funeral Home in Kannapolis. The service will be Wednesday, September 12 at 11:00 am at Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel followed by interment at Carolina Memorial Park. Rev. Rick Felts will officiate.
