Why Should I Plan Ahead

Pre-planning is a matter of taking the time to think about – and record – your end-of-life desires. It’s a thoughtful gesture to those you love, and a way to let go of anxieties about the future. Once done, you can relax, knowing your plans are in the hands of reliable friends or family.

It’s All About Taking Control

Given time to consider it, you’ll quickly realize that pre-planning is all about ensuring that your wishes are known, so they can be acted upon when the time comes. Making the commitment to planning ahead:

- Is easy. There’s no health questionnaire or physical exam required. Absolutely everyone can make a pre-plan, and there is no waiting for return documents. The plan is completed, and put on file in our office.

- Lets your family clearly know your wishes.

- Relieves your family members of making very personal decisions on your behalf at the time of need.

- Can protect your family from the ravages of inflation. Your expenses can be covered when you need them to be, through a pre-payment plan.

Does Pre-planning Require Pre-payment?

Does Pre-planning Require Pre-payment?

The simple answer is just two letters: No. You can set plan to paper by simply recording your wishes, and leave it for your family to pay for your desired services at the time of your passing.

Or, you can protect you and your family from inflation, by pre-funding your plan. This ensures your expenses will be covered when you need them to be.

When you choose to pre-fund your final arrangements, your money is put in a state-approved trust account or top-rated insurance company until required. After your pre-plan is paid for in full, our price is guaranteed. You will never have to pay more for the items you have already paid for.

Another point we’d like to stress: When you pre-plan with Lady's Funeral Home & Crematory, your plan will go where you go. No matter where you reside at the time of your passing, no matter what funeral home you choose to work with, your plan will be transferable to any funeral home in the United States.

What types of Pre-Funding Plans are there?

In North Carolina, pre-funded arrangements can be paid for in advance. That money is put into an escrow account that is either a Trust Account, Annuity or Pre-need Insurance Policy. Each of those are held until an individual passes and then those accounts are closed and the money is applied to the bill. Depending on the type of Pre-need Contract that the money is held under, if there are funds left over, those funds are returned to the family or may be used to pay other expenses that were not originally covered under the pre-need contract.

Types of Pre-need Contracts:

  • Inflation Proof An inflation proof preneed can be written when a person selects specific goods and services and pays in full at the time of selection. The money paid to the funeral director is then invested into an insurance policy, annuity or trust account. These inflation proof pre-needs are designed to earn interest in order to keep up with inflation and funeral home price increases. Once the pre-need has been fulfilled, any excess money regardless of the amount is retained by the funeral home by law. (Please note: Some items are not guaranteed as the funeral home has no control over these costs: for example, obituary charges, sales taxes, monuments, flowers, and outside services.)
  • Standard Contracts A standard contract is issued for persons who do not want to select specific goods and services or do not want to pay the full amount at one time. Some people choose to just set aside a specific amount of money (ex. The average cost of a funeral at today’s prices) and designate it to be used for funeral expenses. Others choose to make monthly payments. Once the pre-need has been fulfilled, any excess money is returned to the family if the amount is less than $1,000 and returned to an estate if the amount is $1,000 or more by law.
  • Irrevocable An Irrevocable Pre-need can be used only for funeral expenses. Many times social services requires a contract to be Irrevocable in order to qualify for Medicaid. Many preneeds are written as a part of a spend down in order to qualify for Medicaid benefits.
  • Revocable A revocable pre-need contract may be revoked by the purchaser and any time, with the proper paper work.

Regardless of which contract is used, all are registered and overseen by the North Carolina Board of Funeral Service,  1033 Wade Avenue, Suite 108 Raleigh, N.C. 27605 which charges a $20 filing fee to open a pre-need contract.
