Outer Burial Containers

Outer Burial Containers

Outer burial containers are not required by law in North Carolina. If they are required, then it is an individual cemetery requirement. But in today's time, 99% of the cemeteries require an outer burial container.

So what is an Outer Burial Container? They can be made of concrete, metal, polypropylene or a combination thereof and there are 2 subcategories of Liners and Vaults. Both Liners and Vaults keep the grave from caving in from the weight of the dirt when the grave is closed as well as the weight of any heavy machinery in the future. The biggest difference between Liners and Vaults is the Vaults are protective. Meaning Vaults are engineered to keep the elements from entering into the inside of the Vault and getting to the casket, whereas Liners only withstand the weight of the soil.
