Benjamin Franklin Sides, Jr.'s Obituary
Mr. Benjamin Franklin Sides, Jr., age 79, of Charlotte, died peacefully Monday evening, February 27, 2006 at Presbyterian Hospital, Matthews, after an extended illness.
Born March 14, 1926, he was the son of the late Frank and Grace Fink Sides. Mr. Sides graduated from A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, NC, where he met his wife, Edith Honeycutt while serving as her math tutor. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Quartermaster Third Class in World War II from 1943 to 1946, primarily serving on the USS Cabot in the Pacific.
Upon completion of his military service, Mr. Sides pursued his architectural education at UNC Chapel Hill and Duke. He was a lifelong architect designing many beautiful churches, office buildings and homes in the Carolinas and Virginia. He was an avid fisherman but most importantly, he was a wonderful husband, daddy and granddaddy.
Mr. Sides is survived by his wife of 59 years, Edith Honeycutt Sides; three children, David B. Sides of Anderson, SC, Mary Barnett of Advance, NC, and Mindy Sides-Walsh of Charlotte, NC. Additionally, he is survived by his nine grandchildren, Michael and Stephen Sides of Clover, SC, Erik Sides of York, SC, Jeff Campbell of Conway, SC, Amy Campbell of Murrells Inlet, SC, Ryan Barnett of Surfside Beach, SC, Terrell Walsh of San Marcos, TX and Madison and McKenzie Walsh of Charlotte, NC as well as 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Jerry Sides of Yuba City, CA, Larry Sides of Matthews, NC, and sister-in-law, Evelyn Christy of Columbia, SC in addition to many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Grace Hofmeister.
He "fought the good fight" and his family will be forever grateful for the extended time he gave them.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2pm on Thursday, March 2nd in the Chapel of Calvary Church, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends on hour prior to the service. Burial will take place following the service at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis, NC. Arrangements are being made by Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis.
