Betty Viola Talbert Graves' Obituary
Mrs. Betty Viola Talbert Graves, 84, passed away Monday, January 1, 2018, at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.
A funeral service for Mrs. Graves will be conducted in Lady's Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 2:00 pm. The Rev. Scott Davis will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 pm until 1:45 pm Friday prior to the service.
Mrs. Graves was born March 24, 1933 in Mecklenburg County. She was a daughter of the late Tom Talbert and Lottie Brown Talbert. She was the youngest of 10 children who grew up on a farm with a loving Christian family. She attended Harrisburg High School and graduated as an honor student. She especially enjoyed the business classes which lead to her career in accounting. She excelled in basketball with the assistance of her coach and math teacher, Sadie Harris, to help the team win the championship and the honor of high scorer for Cabarrus County.
Betty married Thomas Gerald Graves in 1952. Tom worked a number of years with J.A. Jones Construction before opening his business, "Tom's Truck Service". They had two sons, Thomas, Jr. and Robert. The family enjoyed traveling, camping and spending time at the beach, the lake, or on a cruise.
Betty was a devoted mother who enjoyed cooking, baking, flowers and bird watching. She enjoyed canning and freezing foods and became a Master Food Preserver for Cabarrus County. She was active in Harrisburg Extension Club and assisted with judging at the fairs.
She was a member of Pitts Baptist Church where she participated in various activities and sang in the choir. She also sang with "The Furr Quartet".
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband on December 31, 1994; three brothers; and six sisters.
Mrs. Graves is survived by two sons, Thomas Graves, Jr. and Robert Graves and wife Karenanne; grandchildren, Samantha, Grace, Emma and Hannah Graves; great-granddaughter Aerial Hernandez.
