Carolyn Elizabeth Sherrill's Obituary
Carolyn Elizabeth Hatley Sherrill, 76, wife of Tony Lee Sherrill for 48 years, transitioned to her new heavenly home Saturday, July 6, 2013. As family and friends bade her farewell on this side, there were those on the other side welcoming her home. She had been in declining health for a year and most recently seriously ill at the Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.
Carolyn’s parents, the late “Pete” Elbert Pierson Hatley and Elsie Hall Hatley were not aware on May 30, 1937, they had given birth to a beautiful and gifted person who would possess gifts she would share with family that would spill over to numerous others.
Her graduation from A.L.Brown High School was the springboard for her nursing career. In 1958, she completed her nursing studies at Cabarrus School of Nursing with the honor of “Best Bedside Nurse”. With her R.N. Degree, she began her first employment with Cone Hospital, Greensboro. As a nurse, she excelled in various areas of the profession including Emergency Room, local doctor’s office, industrial nursing, home health nursing administration and nursing home supervisor. Carolyn earned a degree in administration before taking an administrative position with a nursing home. For several years, she instructed local CNA classes. Mrs. Sherrill was honored by the late Cannon family as she was employed as a private nurse. Carolyn was known as an excellent diagnostician, along with her passion for helping and healing.
Carolyn was recognized by many organizations for her contributions to the community. She was also an excellent caregiver, caring for her father, mother and mother-in-law in her home over a span of 30 years. She was known as the glue that held the entire family together.
Carolyn loved her church and for years was very active and supportive. Her voice is missed in the adult choir. She also organized a committee to prepare and deliver meals to shut-ins. She loved her large family and made everyone welcome. Many family and Christmas celebrations were hosted by her and Tony. The conversation may have been serious but there was always laughter and love.
She leaves behind in addition to her husband, a daughter, Faye Sherrill, and mother-in-law, Evelyn Sherrill. She is also survived by many cousins and friends. Special family relationships were forged over the years between Carolyn and her cousin, Kenneth Payne of Virginia who was more like a brother than a cousin. She also shared a special bond with cousin Sharon Richardson of Georgia, and cousin Judy Hunter of Kannapolis.
Carolyn was preceded in death by an infant brother, Tony Michael Hatley, her parents, her father-in-law, Lloyd Sherrill, her son, Tony Edwin, and granddaughter, Heather Michelle Sherrill.
Memorial services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Kannapolis, on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at 12:00 noon with Darryl C. Evans, Pastor officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 am at the church prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 201 Vance Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081-4383.
