Dennis Lee Lackey's Obituary
Mr. Dennis Lee Lackey, 73, of China Grove passed away quickly and suddenly in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord. He was proceeded in death by the love of his life, Shirley, whom he was married to for almost 43 years.
He served four years in the U.S. Air Force after being drafted. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he started working at Philip-Morris when the plant opened, and he continued to work there until his retirement right before the plant closed. Dennis was an avid collector of many things from trading cards to models. He loved music and his massive collection of records and CDs proves that. He also had an ongoing passionate love and hate relationship with his massive LEGO model collection. He also really enjoyed the "HIGH" life and watching movies. He was forever a Big Kid at Heart. But despite all his collections that he loved, the one thing he absolutely loved the most was his daughter, Elizabeth. "Bizzy" as he called her was dad's whole world. He very often said that his one and only main job was to make sure that she was taken care of. He was truly the best dad a girl could ever have.
There are so many things we all miss about him, his chuckles when he found something funny, his sarcastic comments (he was the king of these), his hardhead Ness, his giving spirit and his never-ending love and acceptance of those he was closest to. He considered close friends as family and treated us as such. We all called him "DAD" because he truly was the best example of what a great dad should be. He called Kelly another daughter and said John was the son he never had, while also loving their kids as his grandkids and great grandkids. After losing his leg almost 2 years ago, he most looked forward to his multiple weekly playdates with the girls. He said they made him feel young again, kept him on his toes, gave him energy and made him laugh. He loved both the girls very much and they were also the only two people he would "really" listen to lol.
Dad, you made a lasting impression on all our lives. All of us kids love you beyond measure. And we will all miss you more than words can express; you took a big piece of our hearts with you when you left. We will try our best to live by your example and love the way that you did. Those left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved daughter, Elizabeth Sain, and her husband, Will of Concord. His brother, Elvin Lackey and wife, Mitzi of Mooresville. His "adopted" children, Kelly and John Poteat of Kannapolis. His grandkids, Jonathan, Joshua and Jordan Poteat and his great grandkids, Luna and Stella Poteat. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Littlebit.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 pm Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home.
