Chambers, and Andy Chambers both of Cornelius, died at Levine/Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC.
Growing up in Kannapolis was a joy. Attending church at St. John's UCC kept him involved in youth activities, such as Boy Scouts, and he later served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon. There were so many people he admired that encouraged his future.
A graduate of A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, NC, Jim attended Catawba College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business. He immediately went to work for Burroughs Corporation (Unisys) in sales in Charlotte and was transferred to Roanoke, VA as Sales Manager in 1974. In 1978 he founded Innovative Computers in Roanoke VA. and sold this business in 1983 to fulfill his dream of returning to North Carolina to live on Lake Norman. In 1985 Jim established Career Consultants and Temporaries of Charlotte along with lifetime friend and business partner Jim Dayvault of Lakeland, Florida and later sold this business to retire in 1997.
A dedicated supporter of his favorite charity St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Jim also helped many other people in need along the way. He and Barbara established an Endowed Scholarship for Business students at Catawba College. Jim was actively involved in Scouting for many years. An Eagle Scout himself, he served as a Scout leader while his three Sons were involved in Scouting, Jimmy and Brad joining him as Eagle Scouts. He was an active member of the Lion's Club for the Blind in Roanoke VA, as well as the Lake Norman Lion's Club for many years. Jim was recognized as a successful community and business leader.
Dividing their retirement time between their lake home in Cornelius and their mountain home in Blowing Rock, NC, Jim and Barbara surrounded themselves with life long friends Gene and Jan , Will (Deceased) and Bette, Ken and Patti, Robert and Carolyn, Bob and Pam, Bill and Mabel, Lela and Jackie, and many, many others. The love and support of each of them was cherished by Jim.
Predeceased by his Son, Jimmy A. Chambers, Jr. (2008), parents Frank L. and Janie Blackwelder Chambers, Brother John, Sister Cora Lee Walker, his Father and Mother in Law Leonard E. and Rosetta Fowler Keever, and Brother in Law Ron Keever.
Survived by his Wife Barbara K. Chambers, and Sons Brad and Andy Chambers, Sisters Shirley Chambers and Polly Carriker, and Brother Charles F. Chambers, Sister-in-Law Ruby Chambers, Madeline Keever, Brother and Sister-in-Law David and Pat Wright, and a large number of loving extended family.
At his request his body will be cremated and his ashes scattered with son Jimmy's, and later to be joined by his wife Barbara at her death in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, a place they all loved and cherished so much.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made in his memory to the Levine/Dickson Hospice House located at 11900 Vanstory Drive Huntersville, NC 28078 or St. Jude's Children's Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
The family offers special thanks and gratitude to Dr. Gary Frenette, Terri, Kim, and all of the staff at Charlotte Hematology and Oncology, and for the exceptional and loving care received at Levine/Dickson Hospice House by Natalie and Erika in his final journey.
In Jim's own words, his greatest achievement "was to have been blessed with three wonderful sons" and he gave them his unconditional love.
Close family friends Mr. Larry Efird and Brian Bishop will lead a celebration of Jim's life on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis, NC.
