Nellie was born in Asheville on July 18, 1916. She was the daughter of the late Nelia Elizabeth Carver Gillespie and Grady Regan Gillespie. Due to the death of her father in 1926, Nellie was sent to a home and school in Lexington sponsored by the Junior Order for children of men who belonged to their fraternal brotherhood. She graduated from high school there and then went home to help her mother.
In 1935, Nellie and her family moved to Kannapolis, where she and her sister, Elva, went to work for Cannon Mills. While living at the "Hall", she met Forney Reid Sigmon. They were married on November 28, 1940. She and Forney, now deceased, both worked for Cannon Mills until their retirement.
In 1953, they moved to the Rocky River Community where she continued to live until her death. She was known and loved by many in the community. She was an active member of Rocky River Presbyterian Church. She taught lessons in her Sunday school class and at the monthly circle meetings of the Presbyterian women. She also helped by taking on various other roles such as class secretary, keeper of the least coin offering, five cents a meal offering and other duties whenever called upon. She was involved with the Senior Citizens group, The Fourth Tuesday Club, sponsored by the church.
She is survived by her loving family, a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Sigmon; two grandchildren, Anthony Lee Larson of Williamsburg, VA and Heather Lynn Larson of Chicago, IL; two sisters and their husbands, Dr. and Mrs. Stratton Murrell of Jacksonville, NC and Mr. & Mrs. Robert McKinnell of Greenville, SC.
