Nina Gurley's Obituary
Mrs. Nina Van Pelt Gurley, 91, devoted wife and loving mother, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, September 12, 2013.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 pm Sunday, September 15, 2013, at Shadybrook Baptist Church. Her Pastor Rickey Oxford will officiate. Interment will follow at Bethpage Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4:00 pm Sunday prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Gurley was born on May 2, 1922 in Cabarrus County. She was the daughter of the late Eugene Franklin Van Pelt and Nancy “Nannie” Readling Van Pelt. She graduated from Odell High School in 1937 and was employed as a “Rosie The Riveter” with Goodyear during World War II. Mrs. Gurley was a member of Shadybrook Baptist Church and previously a member of Bethpage Presbyterian Church where she was Woman of the Year and lifetime member and former President of the Women of the Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Speight Gurley and “our special little son”, Timothy Gordon Gurley.
Mrs. Gurley is survived by four children, Ben E. Gurley and wife Sue of Lewisburg, WV, Hilda Adams and husband Bert of Lawrenceville, GA, Ken Gurley and wife Sheila of Charlotte and John Gurley and wife Terri of Kannapolis; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and several foster children.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shadybrook Baptist Church, 1009 Oakwood Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
