Robert Doyle Weatherman's Obituary
Robert Doyle (R.D.) Weatherman, Sr., 85, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 18, 2014, at home, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of 66 years to Jeanette E. Weatherman who survives.
Born March 19, 1928 in McDowell County, R.D. was the son of the late Ralph and Lillie Weatherman. Following school in Rowan County, he served as a US Merchant Marine and retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon as a power plant supervisor after over 40 years of dedicated service. He was a proud Allen-Graham Lodge #695 Master Mason and a dedicated electoral poll chief judge for more than 50 years.
R.D. was a faithful member of Mt Mitchell United Methodist Church, the Fred Baucom Sunday School Class and the former Sunshine Group. Committed to following the Lord, he led by example, serving as the chair of the Trustees and the Administrative Board, along with numerous committees.
Mr. Weatherman was a tireless volunteer with the Central NC Council Boy Scouts of America and Troop 591. While serving as the Scout Master from 1972 to 1978, seven of his scouts reached Eagle ranking. In 1976, he led a group of scouts on a cross-country trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. He served as an Assistant Scout Master from 1978 to 2008, during which time 29 of his scouts reached Eagle ranking. He enjoyed volunteering at Camp Cabarrus and Camp Barnhardt and valued the opportunity to shape the lives of many young men.
In addition to scouting, R.D. enjoyed gardening, working outdoors and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jeanette E. Weatherman, of the home; daughters, Patsy Caudill (Lester) of Kannapolis and Nancy Cooke (Clayton) of Boone; son, Bob Weatherman (Cheryl) of Salisbury; grandchildren, Aprille Bell (Bryan Crews), Heather Puckett (Chris), Barrett Cooke (Cassandra), Jennifer Cooke, Katie Tucker (Stephen) and Amy Weatherman (Steph Dunlap); great-grandchildren, TJ Bell, Isaac Bell, Gage Tucker, Emerson Cooke, Bennett Cooke, Caroline Puckett and Carter Puckett; sister Margene Troutman (Raiford); sister-in-law, Marjorie Long; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Oliver.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at Mt Mitchell United Methodist Church led by Rev. Mary Hatley with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at Lady’s Funeral Home in Kannapolis and other times at the home.
Former Troop 591, Kannapolis district, or Central NC Council scouts and scout volunteers are invited to honor Mr. Weatherman as an honorary pallbearer.
