Roy Douglas Mills' Obituary
Mr. Roy Douglas Mills, 88, of Hartley Road, Lexington, formerly of the Winecoff Community, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Ray Howell, IV, of Churchland Baptist Church in Lexington, will officiate. Inurnment with full military rights by the U.S. Army and the Rowan Veterans Council will be at 1:00 pm on Friday, February 3, 2012, at the National Cemetery in Salisbury.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:00 pm Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home prior to the memorial service.
Mr. Mills was born October 4, 1923 in Cabarrus County, a son of the late W. L. Mills and Alice Litaker Mills.
He owned and operated a wholesale greenhouse and served as the chief of Winecoff Volunteer Fire Department for many years. Mr. Mills was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the European Theater including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes during World War II. He received a Purple Heart and was held as a POW during his service to our country. He was a member of Churchland Baptist Church in Lexington.
Mr. Mills is survived by his wife of 68 years, Annie Davis Mills; daughters, Alice White and husband Ray of Concord and Audree Blaikie and husband Bill of Miami, FL; son, Doug Mills and wife Jeanette of Lexington; sisters, Sarah Dayvault of Kannapolis and Nell Phillips Mitchell of Treasure Island, FL; brother, Alex Mills of Rome, GA; three grandchildren, Daniel, Michael and Stepanie and four great grandchildren.
