Mr. Hammond was born September 10, 1939 in Bennettsville, SC. He was a son of the late John Wilson Hammond and Ruth Roller Hammond. He graduated from Hamlet High School and attended UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Charlotte. After school, he enlisted in the United States Army as a carpenter and participated in the Berlin Crisis effort. While he enjoyed carpentry and working with his hands, he enjoyed talking with people. His profession as a Chemical salesman and later as a valued member of Cannon Pharmacy gave him opportunities to provide for his family but also contribute to the health and well-being of his community. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday School and served several times as an Elder and was part of the massive food pantry effort that was started when the mill closed. He served the Boy Scouts of America as Scoutmaster of Troop 35 and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 36.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Ruth Hammond; brother, Larry W. Hammond; and a grandson, Jacob S. Troutman.
Mr. Hammond is survived by his wife, Judy Smith Hammond; daughter, Shelly Faith Troutman and husband Tommy of Gulfport, MS; son, John Lester Hammond of Kannapolis; sister, Abbie H. Williams of Montgomery, TX; grandson, Joshua A. Troutman and wife Tessa of Gulfport, MS; and a much anticipated great granddaughter, Lena Marie Troutman; and numerous loved nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 201 Vance Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
The Hammond family would like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of kindness, love and friendship given in these past months. Your time shared reinforced our faith in one another, brought happiness in time of despair and provided strength in time of need. Thank you.
