Donna Lee Thomson Mauldin's Obituary
Mrs. Donna Lee Thomson Mauldin, 80, of Kannapolis died Friday, December 16, 2022, following several months of declining health. She was being cared for at St. Andrew’s Living Center in Concord.
Donna was born July 21, 1942 in Charlotte, NC to the late Everette Alexander and Mildred Smith Thomson. She was raised in Charlotte, NC and graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in 1960. Upon graduation she attended Appalachian State Teachers College receiving a bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education. She taught Kindergarten in the Kannapolis City School System for 20 years.
It was at Appalachian that Donna met the love of her life, the late Bobby Mac Mauldin. They were married August 10, 1963, at Thomasboro Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC. Soon after the births of their two children, they set roots in Kannapolis.
She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis, and enjoyed many different activities in the church throughout the years. She was a former member of the bell choir and church decorating committee.
Donna’s family was her greatest earthly possession. Donna and Bob Mauldin were married for fifty-one and a half loving years. They both enjoyed traveling with their children, Jill and Alex, each summer. Each trip brought delightful memories and fun times. Donna enjoyed working in the yard with her husband creating gardens, planting flowers and building pathways and borders from a collection of bricks from historic Kannapolis buildings. She dearly loved family gatherings, especially at Christmas. Donna loved opening her home for get-togethers and to showcase her multiple Christmas trees. As a Grandmommy, she loved attending dance recitals, gymnastics meets, and games to watch her granddaughters cheer. As grandparents, both continued to share their love of travel with special summer trips with the girls. As a couple, they enjoyed their travels to the UK, Scandinavian countries, European countries, Canada, and especially their trips to New Zealand and Australia. In 2017, Donna took off on a Greek Island adventure with Jill and her granddaughters. Many cherished memories were made.
At a young age, Donna learned the art of sewing from her mother. She began making clothing for her dolls. As she grew up, she became talented seamstress, having created many unique pieces of clothing, drapes, and bedroom décor. While her children were young, she became a skin care consultant with Vivian Woodard Cosmetics. This gave her the opportunity to be a homemaker and enjoy earning extra money helping others reach their beauty goals.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her daughter Jill Mauldin Jansen and husband Kraig; her son Mathew Alexander “Alex” Mauldin; two granddaughters, Mary Katherine Underwood Fry and her husband Zac and Brianne Chrystelle Underwood and her fiancé Rob Grosskoph; three step-grandsons, Kristopher, Hunter, and William Jansen; her sister, Sandra Thomson Armstrong; three sisters-in-law, Beverly Toms Mauldin, Letha G. Mauldin, and Doris Mauldin Townsend; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to thank all the extended family and friends who have supported us during the last several months with prayers and acts of kindness. We would also like to acknowledge the excellent care she received at St. Andrews Living Center, The Tucker Hospice House, The Landings of Cabarrus, and PruittHealth - Town Center. A private family burial will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2022, in Oakwood Cemetery in Concord, NC. Pastor Eddie Spencer of First Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis, NC will conduct the graveside service.
