Marvin J. Brothers' Obituary
Mr. Marvin J. Brothers, 97, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Morningside Assisted Living in Concord.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, May 6, 2013, at Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church. Rev. Dr. Richard Graf will officiate. Entombment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 pm, Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Jenny and Eric Jones.
Mr. Brothers was born on August 29, 1915 in Spring Creek. He was a son of the late Joseph Daniel Brothers and Gertrude Clark Brothers Mayo.
Mr. Brothers graduated from Aurora High School. His driving career began as a school bus driver and later was employed by Barnwell Trucking, Central Motor Lines and Carolina Trailways. In 1937, he was the first truck driver for Central Motor Lines to drive a truck to Chicago with a load of Cannon Mills sheets and towels.
Mr. Brothers was a US Army combat engineer in the Pacific Theater during WWII. In 1959, he opened Brothers Tire Sales as the owner/operator.
Mr. Brothers was a member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church where he served on the church council numerous times in addition to other church committee positions. He was a member of the Joe Ridenhour Sunday School Class.
Mr. Brothers was an avid golfer and was a member of Irish Creek Country Club for over 30 years. He scored three hole-in-ones during his golfing career.
Mr. Brothers main interests were the community, church and friends. He continued to work to make Kannapolis better throughout his life. He was a charter member of the North Kannapolis Lions Club serving as president and treasurer. He was a member and chaplain for United Commercial Travelers for over 50 years. Mr. Brothers was a member of the first planning board for the city of Kannapolis after its incorporation. He was a volunteer for Cabarrus Meals on Wheels until age 92.
During his retirement, he enjoyed visiting nursing homes where he was known as the "Candy Man" because he was never without a treat.
In 2011, he was the Grand Marshall of the Kannapolis Christmas parade showing the love and appreciation of the people for his contributions to Kannapolis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Sechler Brothers in June of 2003; and three sisters, Gladys Rigsbee, Vera Larsen and Kathryn Wagner.
Mr. Brothers is survived by his daughter, Jenny B. Jones and husband Eric of Kannapolis; son, Doug Brothers and wife Sharon of Kannapolis; brother, J. D. Brothers of Durham; four grandchildren, Todd Haley and Brad Brothers both of Kannapolis, Tracy Roberson and husband Art of Kernersville and Shelley Farris of Concord; three great grandchildren, Ava Farris, Kendall Roberson and Megan Roberson; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friend, Plydene Nash.
